SWOG members include some of the world’s best cancer researchers.  I say that quite often, because it’s true, and because I am so proud of our group. Proving this sentiment correct, ASCO announced this week its Special Award winners, and SWOG members won many of these. As well, many were named fellows of the society, also a very prestigious honor.

Here is a list of our luminaries:

  • Nancy Davidson, MD, FASCO: Allen S. Lichter Visionary Leader Award and Lecture, which recognizes a member who has drastically changed the oncology field or who has made significant contributions to advance the mission of ASCO, CancerLinQ, or the Conquer Cancer Foundation.
  • Julie Gralow, MD, FASCO: Humanitarian Award, which recognizes an oncologist who personifies ASCO’s mission and values by going above and beyond the call of duty in providing outstanding patient care through innovative means or exceptional service or leadership in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Gabriel Hortobagyi, MD, FACP: Gianna Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award and Lecture, which recognizes an active clinical and/or translational researcher with a distinguished record of accomplishments in advancing the field of breast cancer and with exceptional mentoring abilities.
  • Karen Lu, MD: ASCO-American Cancer Society Award and Lecture, which recognizes significant contributions to cancer prevention and cancer control research or practice.
  • Gregory Kalemkerian, MD, FACP: Excellence in Teaching Award, which recognizes a member who has a demonstrable impact on their trainees and who has inspired and shaped their trainees practice of cancer medicine.
  • Supriya Gupta Mohile, MD, MS: B.J. Kennedy Award and Lecture for Scientific Excellence in Geriatric Oncology, which recognizes an ASCO member who has made outstanding contributions to the research, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer in the elderly.
  • Lori Pierce, MD, FASTRO, FASCO: Hologic, Inc. Endowed Women Who Conquer Cancer Mentorship Award, which honors extraordinary female leaders in oncology who have excelled as mentors and demonstrated outstanding commitment to the professional development of women colleagues as clinicians, educators, and researchers.

FASCO status recognizes extraordinary service, dedication, and commitment to ASCO. SWOG awardees are:
