SWOG Cancer Research Network, a member of the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI’s) National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) and a research base for the NCI’s Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP), seeks senior-level candidates for the role of group chair.

SWOG’s mission is to significantly improve lives through cancer clinical trials and translational research.

The group chair leads the organization and directs all scientific and administrative decisions related to Group-funded activities, working closely with the SWOG Network Operations Center and the SWOG Statistics and Data Management Center. The group chair interacts regularly with NCI program officers about these activities and about issues of relevance to the NCI’s NCTN and NCORP.

The group chair provides vision to guide SWOG’s scientific agenda, facilitates scientific productivity, strengthens the group’s research capabilities, and enables its investigators to take advantage of scientific opportunities. By strengthening current activities and finding new opportunities, the group chair plays an important role in shaping cancer medicine practice and policy in the U.S. and abroad. The group chair also appoints SWOG leadership positions, including committee chairs, executive officers, and vice chairs and is responsible for conducting annual evaluations of those positions.

The successful candidate for chair will have:

  • Significant experience with SWOG or another NCTN group
  • Considerable NIH grant experience
  • Demonstrated senior-level leadership skills, both scientific and administrative, with the ability to inspire, to innovate, and to manage a diverse community
  • Demonstrated adherence to the highest professional and ethical standards
  • A position at a major U.S. research institution that can provide administrative oversight
  • A commitment to advancing equity within the group and among clinical trial participants

The selected candidate will serve as group chair-elect from spring 2023 through spring 2025 and will then move into the group chair position for a six-year term (which can be renewed once).

To apply, submit a CV or NIH biosketch and a one-page letter of interest to lesliew@ohsu.edu by December 1, 2022. Women and candidates from underrepresented minority groups are encouraged to apply.
