Laurence H. Baker photo Dr. Harold Varmus, who began his stint as NCI director as no lover of the clinical trial cooperative groups, has been able to establish the successful restructuring of the group network as a priority over other important initiatives. [more]

S0702: Revised for speed
jaw bone The dental exam requirement has been dropped and prior treatment restrictions eased.  The ONJ Registry trial should now be more attractive to patients and easier for sites. [more]
S0812: Vitamin D's role in prevention

C70807/MEAL: Diet and prostate cancer

  • News of S0226 results presented in San Antonio traveled quickly, being picked up in such far flung places as South Africa, Oman, and the Philippines. HemOnc Today did a particularly good write-up.
  • S0016 results, presented at ASH, were covered by several publications, including CancerNetwork.
  • SWOG S0356 results from JCO were reported in HemOnc Today.
  • Group Chair Laurence Baker, D.O., was quoted in a Clinical Oncology article on the revamping of the cooperative group system.

SWOG Spotlight:
S0226 finds anastrozole/fulvestrant combo extends lives

aromatase
Crystal structure of aromatase, which manufactures estrogen.
A combination of anastrozole and fulvestrant used in clinical trial S0226 extended the median survival time of postmenopausal women with hormone-sensitive metastatic breast cancer by more than six months compared to those who underwent standard treatment with anastrozole alone (47.7 months vs 41.3 months). The combination therapy also lengthened the median time to disease progression (15 months vs 13.5 months).
Initial results from the study were presented at the 2011 CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. [more]



F Appelbaum, M.D. Appelbaum stepping down as chair of Leukemia Committee
After 22 years of leading SWOG's leukemia research efforts, Fred Appelbaum, M.D., thinks it's time for new blood. He will remain an active member of the group and continue in his other leadership roles. [more]



S1014, S1106, and S110 funded at $5K per patient
SWOG trials S1014, S1106, and S1108 -- all activated within the past few months -- are all funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the new enhanced capitation rate of $5,000 or 2.5 CCOP credits per patient enrolled. [more]



Baker gets ACS Distinguished Service Award
The American Cancer Society honors SWOG's chair, and the AACR requests a special presentation on SWOG's Latin America initiatives. [more]



Two SWOG Development Awards announced
Crunching histopathology numbers to predict risk level in squamous cell carcinoma, and developing a targeted therapy for a renal cell carcinoma subtype: The latest round of SWOG Development Awards are announced. Next round's deadline: Feb 12, 2012. [more]



Nurses, patient advocates seek synergy
handshake SWOG's Nursing and Patient Advocate Committees met in San Antonio to identify areas for collaboration where 1 + 1 might be greater than 2. [more]



Coltman Fellowship deadline
Member institutions may nominate up to two outstanding new faculty, mentored by a SWOG leader, for two years of Coltman Fellowship support. Deadline is March 2, 2012. [more]

Clock's ticking: Deadlines

 
Did You Know ...?
SWOG's Board of Governors will choose a new group chair-elect at the April 2012 SWOG Group Meeting. The chair-elect will serve in that role for one year, taking over as group chair in April 2013 when the current chair's term ends.
