Summer’s Bumper Crop: We’re “Growing” Hope Grants

June 23, 2017 - Money! Free money! Always good for getting someone’s attention. Summer officially arrived this week, and The Hope Foundation has a huge number of grants on tap, including some of their premier programs.

I urge you to take a little time this sunny season to apply for Hope funds that can advance your research and fast-track your careers. Here is a rundown of upcoming Hope opportunities, listed by deadline:

Young Investigator Training Course Deadline June 30

Founded in 1999, the YITC is the oldest, perhaps best known, program for SWOG members just launching their research careers. Young investigators accepted into the program work one-on-one with SWOG’s most experienced leaders, in order to develop a rigorous, relevant, and feasible SWOG trial concept. The YITC involves intensive mentorship and an online course, and culminates every fall in a three-day workshop with SWOG leaders in Seattle. YITC has graduated 81 members and is responsible for the launch of more than 40 trials. See more here

SWOG Early Exploration and Development (SEED) Fund Deadline July 3

Sometimes investigators need funding to explore an early idea, and Hope can help! The SEED Fund supports all kinds of preliminary research - pre-clinical data studies, secondary analysis from completed trials, research methodology development, and pilot studies. Funded projects and their results must be applicable to future SWOG research. See more here

SWOG/Integrated Translational Science Center Pilot Awards Deadline July 14

This award program makes collaboration possible with our basic science partners at The Jackson and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. ITSC Pilot Awards supports translational medicine research among SWOG, JAX, and CSHL investigators. This preliminary data is then used to develop a SWOG trial or to obtain an external grant. Since 2014, 14 teams have received a total of $713,458 in ITSC Pilot Award funds from Hope, which supports a portion of each collaborative project. See more here

VA Integration Support Program Deadline August 1

I am quite proud to report that since 2015, we’ve awarded $250,000 to 10 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers across the nation to help them expand veterans’ access to NCI clinical trials. VA centers have used Hope funds to expand the hours of current research staff or hire new staff to process paperwork, screen patients, or collect biological samples needed to take part in trials. Last fall, when we last handed out VA awards, 13 NTCN trials had been opened to veterans and about 50 vets had been screened as participants. See more here

SWOG/Hope Foundation Impact Award Deadline September 1

Do you have a new idea for a cancer trial, something fresh, even a little risky? The SWOG/Hope Foundation Impact Award supports studies that may involve a bit of scientific daring but which may potentially lead to a breakthrough in a particular area, or to development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on cancer research. As always, I am so grateful to our partners at Hope for helping SWOG achieve its mission. Please avail yourselves of these opportunities – you won’t be sorry! And, happy summer…

Abstract submissions for the American Society of Hematology annual meeting are coming due. Please submit your SWOG abstract to Publications Manager Pat Arlauskas by July 19 at arlauskp@ohsu.edu
